Innerdalen Secret Meadow

Innerdalen was voted Norway's most beautiful valley in a 2010 national poll, yet it remains remarkably unvisited compared to more famous destinations. The trail from Nerdalen Parking near Ålvundeid (62. 7311°N, 8. 7453°E) follows a gentle path into this pristine glacial valley, where a hidden meadow hosts one of Norway's most spectacular wildflower displays. Botanists have documented over 300 plant species here, including rare Alpine varieties found nowhere else in the region.

Peak bloom occurs in July when the meadow explodes in waves of color—purple lupines, yellow buttercups, white mountain avens, and pink willowherbs creating a living tapestry against the backdrop of the distinctive Innerdalstårnet peak. The easy, relatively flat trail makes this accessible for families and casual hikers, following the Innerdalsvatnet lake before reaching the meadow. The valley's u-shape and steep surrounding peaks create unique microclimates and dramatic acoustics where sounds echo between the mountains. Early morning visits often reward you with mist rising from the lake, creating ethereal photography conditions. Birdwatchers will appreciate the diversity of species, including golden eagles circling the peaks.

The old farm Renndølsetra offers a glimpse into traditional Norwegian mountain farming. The trail continues deeper into the valley for those wanting a longer hike, but the meadow itself is accessible in a leisurely 3-hour round trip. No services exist in the valley; pack all supplies and carry out all waste to preserve this botanical treasure.
