Rising 432 meters between the villages of Stave and Bleik on Andøya, Måtinden offers one of Northern Norway's most rewarding moderate hikes with minimal elevation gain for maximum scenic impact. The trail from the parking area near Stave (69. 2556°N, 15. 8426°E) is well-marked and maintained, covering 3. 8 kilometers each way.
The ascent begins gently through heathland before steepening as you approach the summit ridge. The final section requires some scrambling over rocks but nothing technically difficult. From the top, the panorama is breathtaking: to the north, the turquoise waters and white sands of Bleik beach stretch along the coast; to the west, the bird island Bleiksøya rises from the sea surrounded by thousands of puffins during summer months (you'll see them circling even from the summit); to the south, Andøya's dramatic mountain chain extends into the distance; and to the east, the Norwegian Sea stretches to the horizon. The summit plateau is spacious enough to find a sheltered lunch spot even on windy days. Visit during the midnight sun period (May-July) for unique evening light painting the landscape in golden hues around the clock.
July brings wildflowers dotting the heathland. The trail can be muddy after rain; waterproof boots recommended. Weather changes rapidly on this exposed coast—bring wind and rain protection. Despite the relatively low summit, winds can be strong. The hike is achievable for families with older children who are comfortable with some steep sections. Allow 3-4 hours round trip at a leisurely pace with time for summit photography and wildlife watching.
