Otervika Hidden Beach

Otervika is one of Andøya's best-kept secrets—a pristine white-sand beach accessible only during low tide, hidden beneath towering cliffs near Måtinden (69. 2200°N, 15. 7667°E). This adventure requires careful timing and a willingness to embrace some challenge and risk assessment. Check tide tables before attempting the approach; access is only possible for approximately 2-3 hours either side of low tide.

The trail descends steeply from the parking area, then follows the coastline where you must carefully navigate rocky shoreline sections that become impassable during high tide. Some scrambling over boulders is required, and the terrain can be slippery when wet. The beach itself is a stunning reward—fine white sand curving in a horseshoe bay, dramatic vertical cliffs rising hundreds of meters on three sides, and the Arctic Ocean stretching endlessly before you. The sense of isolation is complete; you'll likely have this spectacular location entirely to yourself. The surrounding cliffs create unique acoustics where waves echo powerfully, and seabirds nest on the heights above.

Swimming is possible for the brave—water temperatures hover around 12-14°C even in summer. The beach faces west, offering spectacular sunset viewing during summer's endless daylight. Bring a tide table and keep constant track of time; being trapped by rising tide is genuinely dangerous. Wear sturdy footwear with good grip for the rocky sections. Pack emergency supplies and let someone know your plans. This adventure is only for confident hikers comfortable with exposure and route-finding on unmarked terrain.
