Selbu Mushroom Forests – Foraging Paradise

The forests east of Selbu (63.2089°N, 11.1234°E) grow on mineral-rich soils that support exceptional fungal diversity. The mix of old spruce, scattered birch, and abundant deadwood creates multiple niches for different species. Chanterelles carpet certain hillsides in August, their golden color visible from meters away. Porcini grow in established spots that locals guard carefully. More than 1,500 fungal species have been documented in the region, including rarities that draw mycologists from across Europe.

Successful foraging here requires patience and attention to forest conditions. Early morning after rain brings mushrooms emerging through the moss. The forest floor reveals itself slowly—what looks like ordinary ground begins to show patterns as your eyes adjust. One chanterelle often signals dozens more nearby. Never eat mushrooms you cannot positively identify; some deadly species resemble edibles.
