This pristine alpine lake sits at approximately 1000 meters elevation in the Hardangervidda region, surrounded by snow-patched peaks even in summer. Access begins from a small lay-by on the Fv655 road near Hellesylt (62.1754°N, 6.7272°E), where a moderately challenging trail leads upward through changing vegetation zones.
The hike starts in birch forest before emerging into open mountain terrain characterized by lichen-covered rocks, dwarf birch, and summer wildflowers. The final approach reveals the lake suddenly, its glass-like surface often creating flawless mirror reflections of surrounding peaks.
The trail can be muddy and stream crossings may be necessary depending on snowmelt. Waterproof boots are essential. The path is well-marked with cairns but requires attention to navigation, especially in fog which can descend rapidly at this elevation.
This is genuinely one of Norway's finest locations for reflection photography, particularly during calm mornings or evenings when wind is minimal. The silence here is profound—no roads, no settlements, just mountain stillness broken occasionally by the call of a golden eagle or the splash of Arctic char in the crystalline water.
The area is popular with Norwegian photographers but remains relatively unknown to international visitors. Early September brings spectacular autumn colors as low vegetation turns crimson and gold, creating a natural palette against the blue-gray peaks.
The lake remains partially ice-covered until late June; July and August offer the best hiking conditions with comfortable temperatures and longest daylight. Bring insect repellent for mosquitoes in July when they can be intense.
The high elevation means weather changes rapidly; bring warm and waterproof layers even on sunny days. Pack out all waste as there are no facilities. Consider camping overnight (wild camping permitted) to experience the midnight stillness and spectacular early morning light when reflections are at their best. Plan at Visit Norway Hiking.
