Beneath the Okstindbreen glacier in Nordland lies a milky turquoise lake fed directly by melting ice—one of the few glacier-fed lakes in Norway accessible by a moderate day hike. The otherworldly color comes from rock flour suspended in the water, ground fine by the glacier's inexorable movement.
The trail begins at Kjennsvasshytta DNT cabin (66.0823°N, 14.2156°E), following marked paths through alpine terrain toward the Okstindbreen glacier. The route climbs steadily for approximately 6 kilometers, passing through zones of mountain birch, alpine meadow, and finally bare moraine deposited by the retreating ice. The glacier comes into view after 2 hours, a white tongue descending between dark peaks. The lake sits at the glacier's snout, a perfect oval of impossible turquoise.
The water temperature hovers around 2-4°C year-round—too cold for anything but the briefest dip, but the shock of immersion in glacial water is an experience itself. The color is most intense on overcast days when sky reflections don't compete with the turquoise. Rock flour gives the water a silky texture unlike anything else. The moraine around the lake shows the glacier's retreat—older ridges far from the ice mark where the glacier reached just decades ago, a stark reminder of climate change.
This is a full-day expedition requiring proper mountain gear. Weather in the Okstindan massif changes rapidly; carry rain gear and warm layers. The trail is marked but crosses snowfields that may persist into July. Trekking poles help with stability. For overnight options, Kjennsvasshytta offers simple accommodation and meals during summer season. The best time to visit is July-August when trails are clear and glacier melt feeds the lake at its most vivid. This is Norway's glacier country at its most accessible—no guides or equipment needed, just a willingness to walk into the high mountains.
