À propos de cette aventure

Between the popular tourist destinations of Flåm and Finse lies Aurlandsdalen, a lush valley so green it seems to glow, carved deep into the mountains and accessible only on foot. This ancient trade route offers one of Norway's finest multi-day walks.

The Valley Character

Aurlandsdalen (60.8912°N, 7.3156°E) drops 900 meters over 40 kilometers from the barren Hardangervidda plateau to the shores of Aurlandsfjord. The upper valley is open and treeless; the lower valley explodes with vegetation—birch forest, rowan, ferns, and wildflowers creating an almost tropical lushness fed by waterfalls and constant moisture. The river Aurlandselvi threads through, varying from gentle meanders to thundering cataracts. Historic farms and summer cabins dot the route, some still in use, others abandoned to time.

The Walking Route

Most walkers take two days, staying overnight at Østerbø mountain farm (now a DNT cabin). Day one descends from Finse or Geiteryggen through open mountain terrain; day two plunges into the green depths to emerge at Vassbygdi in Aurland. The trail is well-marked and maintained, with some steep sections and occasional river crossings via bridges. The physical challenge is moderate, but the aesthetic rewards are exceptional—every turn reveals new waterfalls, new views down the lengthening valley, new colors of green.

Planning Your Visit

The classic route starts with the Finse train from Oslo or Bergen—an experience itself, crossing the roof of Norway. Book Østerbø in advance through DNT (Norwegian Trekking Association) for overnight accommodation. The season runs late June through September, with July offering the longest days and August the most stable weather. Bring rain gear regardless—the valley's lushness requires moisture. Transport from Vassbygdi back to Flåm (with train connections) is available. This is Norway's classic valley walk, combining accessibility with genuine wilderness character.
