À propos de cette aventure

Hidden within Trondheim's vast Bymarka forest lies a peculiar grove where twisted, moss-draped spruce trees create an atmosphere straight from Norwegian folklore. Local children call it "Huldreskog" (the Hidden People's Forest), and even adults feel the magic of this naturally strange place.

The Strange Grove

The grove (63.4156°N, 10.2834°E) occupies a small hollow where unique soil and moisture conditions have caused trees to grow in bizarre forms—spiraling trunks, branches that sweep the ground before rising again, and crowns so dense they block most light. Heavy moss coats everything in green, and the perpetual twilight beneath the canopy creates an otherworldly atmosphere. The effect is entirely natural but so unusual that folklore explanations seem more believable than botanical ones. Mushrooms of extraordinary variety fruit here in autumn, some species rarely found elsewhere in Norway.

Finding the Forest

From the popular Theisendammen lake in Bymarka, follow marked trails southeast for approximately 2 kilometers, then watch for a faint path branching left into denser forest. The grove isn't signed—it's a local secret, found by those who explore beyond main trails. The hollow comes suddenly, announced by an immediate change in atmosphere: light dims, sounds muffle, and the twisted trees begin. The contrast with surrounding normal forest is remarkable. Many visitors report feeling watched—not threateningly, but with the sense that this place belongs to something else.

Planning Your Visit

Accessible year-round via Trondheim's excellent Bymarka trail network. Winter snow adds to the fairy-tale atmosphere. Summer brings the lushest moss and best mushroom diversity. The total walk from Theisendammen is about 5 kilometers round trip on easy terrain. Bring a camera—the photographic possibilities are endless. Respect the grove by staying on existing paths and not removing anything. Several Bymarka lodges offer refreshments after your walk. This is proof that magic doesn't require remote wilderness—sometimes it hides just beyond the popular trail.
