Hidden in the Lyngen Alps lies Djevelporten, a dramatic natural stone arch perched high above the Kjosen valley. This rarely visited geological marvel frames views of glaciated peaks and the deep blue waters of Lyngenfjord far below. The arch formed through millennia of freeze-thaw cycles splitting the granite, creating a window through solid mountain.
The hike begins from Russelv village (69.5847°N, 20.1893°E) and climbs steeply through birch forest before emerging onto open alpine terrain. The trail is unmarked beyond the tree line, requiring navigation skills and good visibility. Total elevation gain is approximately 850 meters over 5 kilometers, with the final approach involving easy scrambling over stable boulders. The route follows a natural drainage gully that provides the easiest line up the mountainside.
The arch itself spans roughly 8 meters across and stands 4 meters high—large enough to walk through comfortably. Standing within the frame, you look directly at the Lyngen glacier tongues spilling down from the icefield above, while behind you the Kjosen valley plunges toward the fjord. The sense of being suspended between worlds is profound. Early morning light illuminates the arch's interior with warm orange tones, while afternoon creates dramatic shadows across the stone.
This is a full-day mountain expedition requiring proper equipment, navigation ability, and stable weather. Snow can linger until July on the upper slopes. The Lyngen Alps are known for rapid weather changes—carry emergency gear and be prepared to turn back. No facilities exist en route. The nearest accommodation is in Lyngseidet or Skibotn. Best visited July through September. This destination rewards experienced hikers with one of Norway's most spectacular and least-known geological features.
