Leka island in Trøndelag is one of earth's geological treasures—a piece of 500-million-year-old oceanic crust thrust above sea level, creating landscapes of unearthly red and green serpentine rock found almost nowhere else on Earth's surface.
The rocks of Leka (65.1012°N, 11.6234°E) formed in an ancient ocean that no longer exists, pushed up when continents collided 400 million years ago. The serpentine and olivine rocks that normally lie 5 kilometers below the ocean floor are here exposed at the surface, creating a color palette unlike anything else in Norway—rust reds, olive greens, and black ultramafic rocks. These rocks are so chemically different from normal continental rock that only specialized plants can grow on them, creating unique vegetation patterns visible from above.
A network of marked trails crosses the serpentine areas, offering easy to moderate walking over this extraordinary terrain. The main geological trail (Leka Geological Trail) is approximately 8 kilometers and interpreted with signs explaining what you're seeing. The rocks themselves are the attraction—smooth polished surfaces reveal crystal structures, cliffs display the tortured folding of ocean floor collision, and the colors change with light and weather. Beaches scattered with serpentine cobbles glow red and green in afternoon sun.
Leka is connected to the mainland by bridge and then ferry from Gutvik. The island has limited services—one small grocery, a few accommodation options—so plan accordingly. The geology center at Leka provides excellent introduction to what you'll see. The trails are accessible year-round but best in late spring through autumn. This is a UNESCO Global Geopark site, recognized for its international geological significance. Combine geological walks with coastal exploration—the island also has dramatic sea cliffs and Viking-era burial mounds. Few places on Earth allow you to walk on ocean floor rocks without diving equipment.
