À propos de cette aventure

Deep within Rago National Park, a glacial cirque cradles a lake fed by waterfalls plunging from three directions. The scale and drama rival famous American parks, but you might be the only visitor. This is one of Norway's most spectacular hidden landscapes.

The Cirque Formation

The cirque (66.5123°N, 15.7234°E) formed when glaciers carved into the mountain from multiple angles, creating a bowl-shaped amphitheater of near-vertical walls. When the ice retreated, water found the lowest routes, creating the waterfalls that now cascade 200+ meters into the central lake. The geometry channels these falls inward so they seem to converge on the lake from all sides—a natural arena of falling water. Spray from the falls creates permanent rainbows on sunny days.

The Approach Journey

The trailhead near Lakshola, east of Bodø, marks the beginning of a 12-kilometer journey into the park. The trail climbs steadily through birch forest, crosses open moorland, and finally descends into the cirque—each section with its own character. The first glimpse of the waterfalls comes suddenly as you crest a ridge, the roar of falling water audible before the scene reveals itself. The trail becomes rougher approaching the lake, with boulder-hopping and wet sections. Allow 5-6 hours to reach the cirque.

Planning Your Visit

This is a full-day or overnight expedition. The cirque offers excellent wild camping sites on dry ground above the lake—falling asleep to waterfall thunder is unforgettable. Carry full camping gear and supplies if overnighting. Day visitors should start early to allow adequate time. The route is marked but demanding; proper hiking boots essential. Best visited July-September when trails are clear. Rago receives perhaps 1,000 visitors annually—you'll likely have the cirque to yourself. This is Norway at its most dramatic, without the crowds that diminish similar landscapes elsewhere.
