Just minutes from central Bergen lies a mountain lake unknown to most tourists—and even many locals. Tucked into a fold of Sandviksfjellet, this small tarn offers complete tranquility with city views, surrounded by ancient pine forest and glacier-polished granite slabs perfect for summer swimming.
Start from Sandviksveien near Montana Youth Hostel (60.4012°N, 5.3298°E). The main trails climb to popular viewpoints, but a faint path branches left after 20 minutes of hiking, marked only by occasional cairns. Follow this through dense blueberry undergrowth and between moss-covered boulders for another 15 minutes until the forest opens to reveal the lake. The unofficial path requires some route-finding but no technical skills.
The lake is approximately 50 meters across, deep enough for swimming in a natural pool of copper-tinted water colored by tannins from surrounding vegetation. Smooth granite slabs slope into the water on the south side, warmed by afternoon sun and perfect for picnics. The surrounding old-growth pine creates a cathedral-like atmosphere, with twisted branches filtering dappled light. Bird song replaces the city noise audible from more popular trails. On warm summer days, you might have this gem entirely to yourself while the main viewpoints are crowded with tourists.
Accessible year-round but best enjoyed May through September when swimming is pleasant. Bring a small towel and swimsuit in summer. The total hike is under 2 hours round trip at a relaxed pace. Start early morning or late afternoon to maximize solitude. Please help preserve this spot by packing out all trash and avoiding loud noise that would disturb the natural quiet. The lake has no official name on maps—locals who know it simply call it "det lille vannet" (the small lake).
