This distinctive peak on Senja Island rises like a jagged tooth from the surrounding landscape, earning its local nickname "The Devil's Tooth". The trail from Fjordgård village (69.3095°N, 17.9264°E) is one of Senja's most rewarding hikes, though it demands respect and preparation.
The route begins gently through birch forest before transitioning to steep, rocky terrain requiring scrambling in sections. The final approach to the 639-meter summit involves exposed ridge walking with significant drop-offs on both sides—not suitable for those uncomfortable with heights.
Weather can change rapidly; bring layers even in summer as summit temperatures can be 10-15 degrees cooler than at sea level. The trail can be muddy and slippery after rain. Bring plenty of water as there are no reliable sources en route. Navigation can be tricky in fog; download offline maps beforehand.
The payoff is extraordinary: panoramic views across Senja's dramatic coastline, neighboring peaks, and the endless Norwegian Sea. During midnight sun season (late May through July), the summit offers all-night golden light that photographers dream of, with the sun tracing a circular path just above the horizon.
The exposed summit provides unobstructed 360-degree views that make the challenging climb worthwhile. On clear days, you can see across to the Lofoten archipelago and watch waves rolling in from the Arctic Ocean.
Start early to avoid crowds and allow plenty of time for the descent, which requires careful footing on loose scree. The parking area fills quickly in summer—arrive before 9am or after 4pm for better chances.
This hike is best attempted June through September when the trail is snow-free. Always check weather forecasts before setting out, as conditions can deteriorate rapidly. The exposed nature of the final ridge makes it dangerous in high winds or poor visibility.
