While tourists crowd nearby Flåm and Gudvangen, the valley of Sogndalsdalen extends into the mountains virtually unvisited. This classic U-shaped glacial valley preserves traditional farming patterns, abandoned summer farms, and walking trails that haven't changed in centuries.
The valley begins at Sogndal (61.2289°N, 7.0912°E) and extends 25 kilometers into increasingly wild terrain. The lower valley retains active farms with traditional wooden buildings, hayfields, and livestock. Further up, abandoned summer farms (seter) dot the hillsides—small turf-roofed structures where farmers once spent summers grazing cattle in high pastures. The upper valley narrows between steep walls, with waterfalls cascading from hanging valleys above. At the road's end, true wilderness begins.
Ancient paths connect the valley floor to the summer farms above, following routes used for centuries to move livestock between elevations. These trails are mostly unmarked but visible as worn tracks through vegetation. The climb to abandoned seters takes 1-2 hours, rewarded with valley views and the melancholy beauty of buildings slowly returning to earth. Some seters retain furniture and implements left when traditional farming practices ended in the mid-20th century. Respect these as time capsules—look but don't disturb.
The valley is accessible by car to approximately 15 kilometers from Sogndal, where the public road ends. Beyond, 4WD tracks and then foot trails continue. The lower valley is easy walking suitable for families; accessing abandoned seters requires moderate hiking ability. Summer brings wildflower meadows and long days; autumn offers spectacular colors and fewer visitors (not that there are many). Sogndal offers all services including excellent apple cider from local orchards. This is Sogn og Fjordane as it was before tourism transformed nearby areas—authentic, quiet, and deeply Norwegian.
