Hidden inside Gaustatoppen, one of Norway's most beloved peaks, a secret railway tunnel drilled during the Cold War allows visitors to reach near the summit without hiking. This engineering marvel, built to service NATO communication equipment, is now open to the public.
In the 1950s, military engineers carved a 1,040-meter tunnel into Gaustatoppen (59.8512°N, 8.6523°E) to create a secure communication station. A unique rail system—two funicular sections—transports passengers from the tunnel entrance at 1,173 meters to an underground station at 1,800 meters. The journey takes about 15 minutes through solid rock, emerging near Norway's most expansive viewpoint. The tunnel temperature is constant 2°C year-round; dress accordingly despite summer warmth outside.
From the upper station, a short climb (about 100 vertical meters) reaches the true summit at 1,883 meters. On clear days, the view encompasses approximately one-sixth of Norway's mainland—an area spanning from the coast to the Swedish border, including Oslo, Bergen's mountains, and countless lakes and peaks. The summit is unusually flat and broad, offering comfortable space for picnics and photography. The combination of effortless access and world-class views makes this unique in Norway.
The railway operates in summer (typically late June through September) and during winter weekends. Booking is essential—capacity is limited and popular times sell out weeks ahead. The experience takes 2-3 hours including transport and summit time. The tunnel entrance is at Gaustabanen, accessed by car or the ski resort's gondola. Those preferring to earn their summit can still hike the traditional 5-kilometer trail from Stavsro. This combination of Cold War history, Norwegian engineering ingenuity, and spectacular scenery creates an experience found nowhere else in the world.
