Informazioni su questa avventura

Carved by catastrophic glacial flooding 10,000 years ago, Jutulhogget is Norway's deepest canyon—a 2.4-kilometer gash in the Hedmark plateau where vertical walls drop 240 meters to a narrow river far below. This geological wonder remains largely unknown outside Norway.

The Canyon Formation

When the ice age glaciers melted, a massive ice-dammed lake burst through to the sea in a flood of almost unimaginable violence. The water carved Jutulhogget (62.1823°N, 10.8234°E) in perhaps hours or days—a canyon that normal erosion would take millions of years to create. The evidence is visible in smooth-scoured walls, giant potholes drilled by swirling rocks, and the sheer improbability of the gorge cutting through solid bedrock. Local folklore attributed it to trolls (jutul) wielding giant axes—hence the name "Troll's Cut."

The Rim Walk

A trail follows the canyon rim for approximately 3 kilometers, with multiple viewpoints offering vertigo-inducing perspectives into the abyss. The depth is difficult to comprehend until you watch a bird fly below and realize you're looking down at something that should be above. Several side ravines cut perpendicular to the main canyon, creating knife-edge ridges between. The vegetation changes dramatically from exposed rim to sheltered depths—dry pine forest above, lush ravine growth below. In spring, waterfalls pour over the rim from melting snow.

Planning Your Visit

Access is via the village of Alvdal, with parking at the canyon's southern end. The rim trail is well-maintained but keep children and those with vertigo back from unfenced edges. The full rim walk takes 2-3 hours; shorter loops are possible. Autumn brings spectacular colors when birch turns gold against dark canyon walls. The area is part of Forollhogna National Park, offering extended hiking options. Despite its geological significance, Jutulhogget sees relatively few visitors—perhaps 10,000 annually compared to millions at the Grand Canyon it rivals in drama if not scale.
