Laupstad Beach

Laupstad Beach near the small village on Andørja island (68. 8686°N, 17. 1414°E) consistently ranks among Northern Norway's most beautiful beaches, yet remains remarkably quiet and untouristy. Fine white sand creates a Caribbean-like contrast against the Arctic setting, while crystal-clear turquoise waters lap gently at the shore. The beach curves in a perfect arc, backed by grass-covered dunes and framed by dramatic mountains rising directly from the sea. Access is simple—a short walk from the village parking area leads directly to the sand.

The shallow, gradually deepening water makes this one of the few Northern Norwegian beaches suitable for swimming, though even in summer water temperatures hover around 14-16°C (brave souls only! ). The beach is excellent for families—safe swimming, soft sand for building castles, and rock pools to explore at low tide. The surrounding scenery is postcard-perfect with mountain reflections in the calm water during still conditions. Visit during the midnight sun period (June-July) for surreal light at midnight when the sun hangs low over the horizon, bathing everything in warm golden hues. The beach faces northwest, offering spectacular sunset views.

September brings Northern Lights possibilities with the beach as a foreground. Facilities are minimal (one pit toilet in summer), maintaining the natural character. Bring all food and water. Summer weekends can be busy by local standards, but weekdays often mean having the beach largely to yourself. The short approach makes this accessible for all ages and abilities. Combine with visits to nearby nature reserves or hikes for a full day on Andørja.
