Stegastein Alternative Viewpoint

While the famous Stegastein viewing platform attracts busloads of tourists, this secret alternative trail from Aurlandsvangen village (60. 8796°N, 7. 2011°E) offers arguably superior views of the Aurlandsfjord with virtually no crowds. The path climbs steadily through old farm tracks and forest before emerging onto open mountainside with expanding vistas. The reward is a natural rocky outcrop that provides an even more dramatic perspective than the architectural platform—looking straight down 650 meters to the fjord below, with unobstructed views along the water's serpentine curves and up to snow-capped peaks.

This is a genuine local secret, used by Aurland residents who want to show visitors the area without the tourist circus. The trail is well-maintained but unmarked, following cairns and worn paths. The relatively easy grade makes it accessible for families with older children, though the exposed viewpoint requires supervision and respect for the drop. Best visited in morning or evening light when the sun illuminates the fjord from the side, creating dimension and color variations in the water. Spring brings wildflowers and waterfalls from snowmelt, while autumn offers golden birch forests.

The hike takes about 45 minutes up, 35 minutes down. Bring water and snacks to enjoy at the summit. In winter, the trail can be icy and requires proper footwear; microspikes recommended.
