Karasjok Reindeer Camp

Sami reindeer experience in Karasjok, Finnmark Plateau. This authentic cultural immersion at Sápmi Culture Park (69. 471°N, 25. 511°E) connects you directly with indigenous Sami herders who have lived in harmony with reindeer for thousands of years. Winter visits (December through March) offer magical reindeer sleigh rides across snow-covered tundra under Arctic skies, often with opportunities to witness the Northern Lights.

Experienced herders share traditional knowledge about reindeer behavior, seasonal migration patterns, and the deep spiritual connection between the Sami people and their herds. You'll learn to lasso, hear traditional joik songs (Sami vocal music), and sit inside a lavvu (Sami tent) around an open fire while enjoying traditional foods like bidos (reindeer stew). Summer visits reveal different aspects of herding life, including calf-marking ceremonies and the challenges of managing herds during the midnight sun period. The experience is run by actual Sami families, ensuring cultural authenticity and supporting indigenous livelihoods. Dress for extreme cold in winter (temperatures can reach -30°C) with thermal layers, warm boots, and face protection.
