Træna Archipelago

This archipelago is a scattering of hundreds of tiny islands and skerries far off the mainland of Nordland, where only a handful are inhabited. Accessible by regular ferry from Sandnessjøen (free of charge), Træna represents one of Norway's most remote and untouched coastal communities. Outside the brief summer festival season, the islands feel like the edge of the world—wind-sculpted rocks, abandoned fishing stations, and crystalline waters stretching to the horizon. The main islands of Husøya and Sanna offer hiking trails for all abilities, from gentle coastal walks to more challenging ridge routes with panoramic seascapes.

The geology here is ancient and dramatic, with rock formations dating back millions of years, carved into fantastical shapes by relentless Atlantic weather. Birdlife is exceptional, with thousands of seabirds nesting on the outer skerries during summer months. The midnight sun period (May-July) bathes the islands in golden light around the clock, while winter brings dramatic storms and a stark beauty. The tiny community maintains traditional fishing culture, and you might encounter locals checking nets or drying fish in centuries-old methods.

Accommodation is limited to a small guesthouse and campground—book well ahead. The islands' isolation means weather can trap you here for extra days if storms prevent ferry service, so build flexibility into your schedule. Pack all necessary supplies as shops are minimal.
