About This Adventure

Beneath the Blefjell plateau in Telemark lies a network of natural ice caves where winter never ends. Cold air sinks and pools in these granite fissures, preserving ice formations throughout summer while wildflowers bloom above. This geological curiosity offers an otherworldly experience just hours from Oslo.

The Cave System

The main cave entrance is located at 59.8234°N, 9.2876°E, accessible via a 45-minute hike from the Blefjell mountain road. Several interconnected chambers extend into the mountainside, with the largest reaching 25 meters deep. Ice formations include frozen cascades, delicate ice crystals, and smooth ice floors. The temperature inside remains near -5°C even when surface temperatures exceed 20°C. The caves formed along natural fault lines in the bedrock, creating deep fissures that trap cold dense air in a phenomenon called a "cold air trap."

Exploring Safely

The cave entrances are narrow but navigable without technical equipment—a headlamp and warm layers are essential. Ice can be extremely slippery; wear boots with good grip or bring simple crampons. Never enter alone, and inform someone of your plans. The caves are entirely natural with no developed paths or lighting. Mobile phone coverage is unreliable inside. Spend no more than 30-45 minutes inside to avoid cold-related issues. The ice formations are fragile—admire without touching to preserve them for future visitors.

Planning Your Visit

Paradoxically, summer is the best time to visit when the contrast between warm surface and frozen interior is most striking. The access hike crosses open moorland with excellent views over the Blefjell plateau. Pack a picnic to enjoy in the sunshine after your subterranean adventure. The area is within Blefjell Landscape Protection Area—practice strict Leave No Trace principles. This is one of Norway's lesser-known natural wonders, still unknown to most Norwegians. Nearby Lampeland or Flesberg offer accommodation and supplies.
