Femundsmarka National Park is a vast wilderness of lakes, low hills, and ancient stone landscapes shaped by ice and time. Unlike alpine Norway, this is a land of rounded forms and water corridors, where lakes link together like a natural highway system. Walking here often follows shoreline paths across smooth rock slabs polished by glaciers, offering easy navigation and constant proximity to water. The area feels profoundly quiet—sound carries far, and encounters with other people are rare outside peak summer weeks. The park has a long tradition of wilderness travel by canoe, and many trails reflect this, connecting natural landing points and campsites. Vegetation is sparse and hardy, with pine forest clinging to cracks in the rock.
The simplicity of the landscape encourages slow movement and reflection. Femundsmarka is excellent for multi-day trips, but even short walks provide a strong sense of remoteness. Fishing is popular, with trout and char in many lakes. Weather can change quickly, and exposed rock can be slippery when wet. Best visited June–September. This is one of southern Norway’s best destinations for experiencing true wilderness without extreme terrain.
