About This Adventure

Hidden in Lysefjord, the old hydropower settlement of Flørli is home to one of the world's longest wooden staircases—4,444 steps climbing straight up the mountain beside a historic pipeline.

The Climb

The ascent reveals sweeping fjord views that expand with every hundred steps gained. The wooden staircase follows the historic water pipeline that once powered hydroelectric operations in this remote settlement. As you climb, dense forest gives way to more open terrain, and the perspective across Lysefjord becomes increasingly dramatic.

The 4,444 steps are relentless—each one numbered, allowing you to track progress as you ascend. The climb is physically demanding, with your legs burning and heart pounding, but the engineering marvel of the staircase and the expanding views provide constant motivation. Most hikers take 1.5-2 hours to reach the top, with frequent stops to catch breath and absorb the scenery.

Access & Planning

Remote and car-free, Flørli is reached only by ferry from Lysebotn or Forsand, adding to the sense of adventure. The settlement retains its historic character with abandoned hydropower structures creating an industrial archaeology atmosphere mixed with natural beauty.

This is one of Norway's most unusual hikes—less about wilderness and more about human engineering and endurance. The staircase is well-maintained but exposed, so check weather before attempting. Bring plenty of water and energy snacks. Most visitors stay at the historic Flørli hostel, allowing an early morning start before day-trip ferries arrive. The descent is harder on knees than the ascent—trekking poles recommended.
