About This Adventure

On the Nesodden peninsula opposite Oslo, a small bay has been home to artists, writers, and free-thinkers since the 1920s. Colorful wooden studios and cabins dot the shoreline, creating an open-air gallery where creative legacy meets wild Oslofjord coastline.

The Creative History

The cove near Hellvik (59.8234°N, 10.6412°E) became a haven for Oslo's artistic community seeking escape from urban convention. Painters set up studios to capture the changing fjord light, writers found inspiration in the sea views, and musicians gathered for impromptu performances on summer evenings. Some original cabins still stand—quirky wooden structures painted in unconventional colors, decorated with found objects, and positioned to capture specific views. The community represented Norway's early 20th-century bohemian movement, challenging bourgeois values through art and alternative living.

The Coastal Walk

A shoreline path connects the cove to surrounding beaches and rocky points. The walk passes studio buildings still in use by artists' descendants, crosses smooth granite slabs ideal for sunbathing, and winds through coastal pine forest with wild roses and sea buckthorn. Swimming is excellent in summer—the water is cleaner here than closer to Oslo, and several small beaches offer entry points. The interplay of cultural history and natural beauty makes this unlike typical Norwegian coastal walks.

Planning Your Visit

Reach Nesodden by a scenic 20-minute ferry from Oslo's Aker Brygge terminal. From Nesoddtangen ferry terminal, local buses or a pleasant 5-kilometer walk reach the starting area. Respect private property—many cabins are still occupied. Several studios open for exhibitions during summer months; check local listings. The walk itself is about 4 kilometers round trip on easy terrain. Combine with lunch at local cafés for a full day escape from the capital. Best visited late spring through early autumn when the artistic community is most active and swimming is pleasant.
